Documenting another Whirlwind that isn’t bad but they have a new playfield they want swapped and the cabinet redone and decals. Most of the swap will be a transfer over as many parts are already new, has LED’s, etc.

It will get new Hot Rod Arcade chrome wireforms. Working out details on the trim. Likely just original stainless.

Cabinet is stripped and playfield is ready for the rotisserie. The double sided tape is always a pain to get off.

I love your work!

IMO: I'm surprised the new Playfield blue (top and bottom) is SO much lighter than the original, and the left side blue is SO much darker the original.

With that said: I'd still be very happy with the new Playfield.

#16 6 months ago

Thanks Kerry. It is quite a difference. There's also a bunch of holes missing for the apron catches and ball trough and slings. I'm sure there will be more.

#17 6 months ago

Dave I wonder which run thst playfield is. I have a cpr and it doesn’t seem anywhere near as off color wise as this one. I haven’t looked at mine in a long while so I could be wrong on thst. I’m not sure I’d be ok with that or not.

#18 6 months ago

It’s from 6 or so years ago. My own playfield that I got for my old machine was the second run. It was nearly identical to this.

#19 6 months ago

I have one (maybe two) gold playfields from this same run. It has something in it that once seen, you cannot unsee. I believe it was the last of the screen prints of Whirlwind from CPR. I know there was a CPR run of Whirlwind (I think) made with digital printing that did not have the shooter lane switch cutout.

#20 6 months ago

So here is the playfield in my whirlwind and my cpr. It’s silk screened for sure but don’t know the run.

The sanding of the cabinet has begun courtesy of 80spit

As parts are drying or coming out of the tumbler, I’m starting to populate. T nuts are all in and pop bumper studs are set in. I have a cheap HF organizer that I use to organize parts after I separate them from the tumbler. It’s a PITA but makes it fast during assembly. As much as I hate this organizer, it’s the only one I’ve used for this so I use the same sections for the same screws for all games.

Slings got all new mechs less coil brackets. I’ve shared that these are often the most worn so I try and go all new unless they’re in great shape or recently replaced.

Nice new Mantis scoops since one had broken welds. Thanks kstairmantis for all the improved parts you make.

I'm pretty sure if I owned that organizer, I would have dropped it at least two times.

The supervisor makes sure it doesn’t happen or it would lol!

Finding some issues as I go like this diverter spring broken. A new one replaces it.

Wire ball guides are now installed and using the kruzman clearcoat kit to seal the holes I had to drill they were there but not through the paint layers. So was able to locate from the bottom and make and then prep and drill. Ron’s kit helps lock down the hole after drilling.

Many of the posts are installed.

Whirlwind is one of my favorites, I can't wait to see this all finished up!
The swap on this isn't terrible especially with setup you have.

CPR playfields are off color wise on a lot of games.
Silkscreened and "Digital" doesn't seem to change the art issues or color variation much.
Corvette is another one that really bothers me as the skin tone of the driver is completely off.
Addams is better but the line work is noticeable when side by side.

I'll take what I can get but I wish Buthamburg was able to run all these games.

You do cabinets too??

Not anymore. My friend does the cabinet restoration for me now. I don’t have the skill set for my level of expectation.

Mechanisms are broken down for cleaning and rebuilding.

Well this upper flipper coil is in bad need of replacement. The coil stop is tighter than the sleeve was.

A couple of broken drop targets.

Progress tonight. Got some LED’s in. It had some before however it was a mosh-mash of styles, brands, and quality.

Buthamburg’s stuff is awesome. The only issue I had was doing my own swap on first run of Getaway where there were no dimples. But no biggie. I hear they fixed it. This is an easy swap for sure. Only stuff I don’t like to swap is older Bally and Gottleibs.

Pop bumpers are all rebuilt and mostly new.

The apron got a new (to replace the missing) rubber and chromed wire form from Hot Rod Arcade.

Curious, why not older Ballys?

Not my era so I don’t own any. I just never enjoyed them.

Most wood screw holes are not drilled in this playfield. So have been using the transfer paper along with lining things up to get holes made. Ball trough, apron, area and slings done.

Some of the old rings came clean but a little too worn out for my comfort to use so installing new replacements in the same color.

Pop bumpers are installed completely. Going to try and run with a full yellow pop bumper cap for the cut one.

Now have the spinning wheels assembly installed.

All new stand up targets. Drilled them out to convert to the Steen anti-swap version since this title like TAF and others takes a beating.

All the ball guides are in less the ramp two. I may wait until the ramp is ready to make sure everything plays well together.

I’m not familiar with this. Can you explain?

Quoted from mollyspub:

This may be a a better explanation from another swap on a TAF:
https://pinside.com/pinball/forum/topic/another-taf-playfield-swap-and-overall-refresh-#post-6825603

You take this kitty PL sells:
https://www.pinballlife.com/mm5/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=BK3

You need to drill out rivets and replace the back section and front mount and replace with PL kit. It has a L bracket to keep the target from bending back too far like DE/Sega used and improved upon by sandwiching the target with a piece that locks the front and back so the target can’t sway to the left. No matter how tight a rivet crimp is, over time the target can move to the sides. This eliminates all of that. Great design. I owe whoever came up with that a beer.

More mechanisms placed. Light harness being laid in.

Have a good bit of the plastics done. To make the holes for the non-dimpled studs that the plastics attach to, I take the new plastic and run a pointed pick to make the mark(s). Then mark with a sharpie and then drill and prep as usual.

I try and use screws where rivets are when possible.

IMG_9150 (resized).jpegIMG_9150 (resized).jpegIMG_9152 (resized).jpegIMG_9152 (resized).jpegIMG_9153 (resized).jpegIMG_9153 (resized).jpegIMG_9154 (resized).jpegIMG_9154 (resized).jpegIMG_9151 (resized).jpegIMG_9151 (resized).jpeg

Got the inner loop switch figured out for placement once everything was there. So that’s done.

Did the same for mid rubber ring left and right 110 point switches. Measured and compared to original and then see how it fits onto the new playfield and parts. Cinch down, solder wires, and done.

The flipper bats are now set in and cinched. They’re all new as the others had cracks. It’s crazy that almost every game I tear down has all or most all broken. They will really affect the ball strength if it’s broken. Check the inside of your bats!

IMG_9162 (resized).jpegIMG_9162 (resized).jpegIMG_9163 (resized).jpegIMG_9163 (resized).jpeg

Fitted the apron and compared measurements with the multi ball kicker. Got that mounted up. It will be easier to have that in place for the switch bracket placement.

Have the lift ramp bracket set up underside. Installed the pin.
